I looked to my side to see the angered face of Ed, the caretaker, by my side. His face was blanched, white as a sheet with worry, but his voice was still gruff.

"I-I uh," I sputtered as I struggled to my feet, hearing frantic splashing as Damian ran over to us, pulling me into a quick hug.

“Liam! God, I thought you—” Damian said, his voice choked up.

"If you two morons could finish up the feelings fest, we still have a poltergeist to deal with," Ed said, cocking a gun and pointing it back at the lake.

“Jesus, Ed!” Damian said, eyeing up the gun. Ed just looked over at him as though understanding the unasked question hanging in the air.

“The bullets are made from pure iron. Hurts ghosts pretty good. Been using it to keep this one in check,” he said, looking through the viewfinder.

“What the hell?! You know about the ghost?!” I shouted.

“Of course, I know about her! I told you idiots to stay away for a reason! Now come on, back up to the cabins. She doesn’t like to go far from the lake, so we might be able to buy some time up there.”

Ed pushed Damian and me up the path, though we didn't need to be told twice. The three of us kept a quick pace as we headed back up to the camp. Ed constantly threw a look over his shoulder, ensuring that there was nothing following.

"You seem to know a lot about this ghost, Ed," I said, needling him for info.

“I’ve made it my business to know her. She’s my problem.” He said brusquely.

“Why? Did you kill her?”

The question had barely left my lips when I felt my body lifted off the ground and pressed roughly against the trunk of a tree. Ed had me pinned, his hand around my throat.

“I never hurt her,” Ed said through gritted teeth, tears brimming at the corners of his eyes. “Eleanor was a good person. She cared about me like no one ever would. She was my best friend.”

"Wait, you're Edward…aren’t you," I asked, gulping as his grip only seemed to get tighter. “You’re her brother.”

Ed then let me go, heading back up the path.

“Ed! You were there when Eleanor died!” I called after him, quick on his heels.

“So?! A lot of people were there!” Ed growled.

“So, you know what really happened!" I persisted.

“You need to tell us what happened, Ed!” Damian exclaimed loudly as we both followed behind Ed.

“It was a long time ago!” Ed said, continuing to avoid answering our question. I was not going to give up, though, and I could tell that Damian would not either. So we continued to pester him like rowdy children until finally, Ed had reached his breaking point.

“I don’t know what happened, OK!? I was a little boy! One minute we were swimming and having fun, and the next minute we were fighting for our lives!” Ed paused, taking in several breaths, before continuing. “The waves got too strong, and we couldn’t tread water any longer…and Eleanor, she saved me.
